Fear is the Mind Killer
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
Bene Gesserit litany against fear.
From Frank Herbert’s “Dune“.
Interesting how your mind recalls things from your past when you see pictures or read things – almost as if there are hidden triggers in every experience that you push into your memory banks and once those triggers are activated the memories come back without a conscious effort to recall them. ‘Dune’ was such a popular book at the time that some may be familiar with it and the phrase “Fear is the Mind Killer”. A powerful phrase.
Ow yes! That one will stay forever with me…
It’s come in useful when I’ve had to give the odd dodgy presentation, I can tell you! 😉
love this quote 🙂
“I will permit it to pass over me and through me.” – Such a great line…it’s so much more frequent that we resist – we push against (or hide from) – our fears. The only true way is to allow the fear to move and not to block it. And, by the way, this is SO not “an aside.” Great site – glad you found mind so that I could find yours.
The phrase ‘Fear is a mind killer’ is so ingrained in my psyche it would be nothing other than an aside. 😉 For me, recognition is the is primary step in dealing with any ‘fear’, secondary is deciding to deal/face/confront/avoid that fear.
