It’s an old wall of an ecclesiastical building of some sort, about three arches in all. Not sure what it is but from what I can remember it seems a little modern than the Abbey itself.
So true! Good thing I didn’t ever get myself in a place like that after dark. I have an extreme vivid imagination. It’s my mind that often scares myself half to death. I’m a screamer! 🙂
🙂 🙂
Beautiful. Born and brought up in Yorkshire and I never went to Whitby – must make the trip soon. Thanks for v much sharing this
I suspect there’s a couple of days worth of photography at the very least in Whitby. Whitby, if you’re interested, was also the home of Francis Meadow Sutcliffe
Indeed. I’ve had various large postcard type repros of his photos for many years – I think there somewhere in a drawer now. The clarity of the studies is always striking. Thanks for reminding me 🙂
Really nice shot- thank you. We took the whole family up to Whitby last year and I tried (along with half a dozen other folk) to get that shot near sunset. Not being tall enough to see easily over the stone wall round the site was a definite minus when it came to picture quality 🙂
Very much agree with you about the town being a great place for photography generally.
Very classic indeed 🙂 But beautiful nevertheless…
Thank you!
Now you are really making me want to take that trip up north!
I think wherever you look in the UK you’ll find similar opportunities. 😉
incredibly beautiful place and you’ve captured it so wonderfully!
Thank you, Anarya!
Inspiring! What a classic — the architecture and the photo both.
Thanks. 🙂
I think you must have been blessed to have such still waters… how elegantly they reveal the stone building.
Stone, water, a sunny day and black and white film, what more could you need! 🙂
A skilled photographer to bring us perfection! Wonderful!
You’re very kind thank you.
So beautiful in bw and with that great reflection!
Thank you, I suspect that the exact scene will be there for some time to come.
Stunning. Very atmospheric in B&W. I am curious, what is the strange structure far right?

I like your “classic” pic. I made a more “mysterious” (not so sure if that’s the word I really mean) one of the ruins at night: http://happyfulworld.wordpress.com/2012/07/04/in-darkness-iii-whitby/
One of your best Stephen!
Thanks Susan! 🙂
Gorgeous! I envy your location. We have no ruins like that in Kentucky. Very nice shot 🙂
Thank you. You may not have so many ruins ( ’cause you look after your places), but what wonderful countryside you seem to have!
Great shot – I have a very similar one myself (http://steviegill.wordpress.com/2010/08/27/whitby-abbey/), although looking back mine seems a little over-processed. It definitely is the shot to take!
Unfortunately I didn’t really have the sky for a moody version. 😉
Lovely reflections
What I would like to try would be a night time shot with long exposure to get that satin look on the water.
Outstanding work in b/w ! Wonderful grey textures in absolute accordance with the overcast skies.Loved the faithful reflections on the placid waters.
Thank you for your kind words. 🙂
Great capture and it looks stunning in B&W.
I’m sure there’s more in the shot than I’ve actually realised too.
How Beautiful!
So, this is close to where you live? what happens at night after they turn the lights off? Is it scary then?
Scary? Nah!

There’s nothing more thrilling than wandering around ruins in the dark on your own….. what was that creak?! 😉

It’s the sort of place where an artist photographer spends the autumn/winter/spring for a full blown project.
