A photograph I took when the kids were young. In a ‘wildlife park’ (zoo). I have to say the animal did look very healthy. I think one of the most blood curdling sounds I know is the low growl of a big big cat (Tiger, Lion).
The paradox of the tiger…. the epitome of power and strength on the edge of extinction. How we admire it’s beauty … it reminds us of ourselves, I think…. Oh, how we’d love to roar like that! I guess I was born in the year of the tiger and so have a special affection for these beasts… Of course, only from a distance, mind you. They are the incarnation of all that is wild for sure.
In Antwerp they have these ‘backstage’ visits to the zoo to get an idea of the work that goes into looking after all the animals. Saw a tiger there too, quite close, At about a meter from where I stood – behind bars of course. He was making his nervous rounds in the cage and during one of those rounds he lifted his head and looked me straight into the eyes. Believe me, even with bars and all, I went a big step backwards! They are impressive! But what a beauty and power!
If you visit a Tiger in a zoo, always be wary of what it’s doing with is back end. I’ve seen a few people soaked in Tiger urine as Tigers seem to relish spraying their wares through the bars of their cage.
O, I know 🙂 Lions do that too, by the way… it’s catspeak for ‘you’re mine!’ I think…
I would think it would certainly ruin the rest of your day at the zoo.
Fabulous picture. Such a beautiful animal!
Thanks!
Brilliant capture in terms of both colour definition and the stealthy intent
Thank you!
Great shot and sharpness
Thanks a lot!

You suely have a great shot there!
I heard that sound in Tanzania last month – what a sound! And I was so close to lions, that I could have touched them…. (but I didn’t!)
It makes your very core quake doesn’t it.
Lovely picture! And certainly a lovely animal, one of my favourites!
Thank you. Definitely best in their natural environment or behind bars – one of those creatures you’d have no chance against.

I am sure it would 🙂
Perfect!
Thanks, Mary!
Excellent
It’s one of my favourite ‘non-wildlife’ wildlife shots.
