I have a relatively old version of photoshop (CS2) – the majority of the original image was dark green, so I did a channel mixer convert to mono with 80% green and 20% red and then a little curves. The higher than normal green % helped lighten these areas. I was going to simply convert against 100% red, making a graphic black and white image but I preferred this tonal option.
Love the B&W. Did you burn the bright water area or is that the way it came out?
