Looking over the reservoir dam I noticed this little arrangement on one of the banks. It might have been down to the fact the light was starting to fail but to me it looked just like a firework.

I can see that too. If I squint and de-focus my eyes, it looks like a bright semi-circle of yellow with clouds billowing up from it.
As you may appreciate, the 3D visual with movement of by the wind added to the illusion.
I see it. Have you tried increasing the contrast in post-production just to play with the effect?
I did for a few seconds, until I got bored – it took me too far away from my normal ‘photographic’ output. (if you get my drift).
