I was just working on some pictures for my other blog when I came across this shot which I took in a local church. At the time I wondered what this mark on the wall was. After some thought, my guess is that a candle or two has left some soot on the wall. I’m not an artist myself but it seems to me there’s potential for an art project based on candle soot – I’m particularly taken by the graduated greys – almost looks as if something is trying to get out of the wall (too many late night horror films!)

Ha! I also thought it looked like something was trying to push through the wall. I then read your text and saw we had the same idea. We must have watched the same horror movies.
🙂 🙂
Same here! 😀
🙂
I agree with someone trying to get out of the wall!
Like something out of Harry Potter perhaps.
That’s what I was thinking!
You are spot on Stephen exactly what I thought when I saw this image. Great eye for catching a very dirty wall!
I have kept my eye open for similar in other churches but have not found anything – though it is quite unusual to have white-washed walls in the churches I visit, they are generally bare stone.
It looks INCREDIBLY 3-dimensional, Stephen ! In fact, it’s hard to accept your word that it’s merely stains on a wall … So yes, someone should definitely do some further work into what candle-smoke stains can create. 🙂
And P.S.: I am totally rapt in that header ! It’s far more impressive than a collection in a slider !
thanks – size does lend a certain favourable outcome to the original, in which a dodge of camera shake is evident.
Oh, you damned professionals ! – always seeing something in your work to be dissatisfied with … [grin]
‘professional’? I wish.
Certainly when we have a dedication to a hobby we have a eye for ‘not quite right’ – doesn’t matter what the hobby.
I know. I like taking the mickey. [grin]
🙂 – you can’t bit of banter in your life! 😉
yes…..
It seems we’ve all seen the same thing!
yes – it seems the writing is on the wall as far as perception is concerned!
Oh thats too spooky 🙂 Glad it wasn’t in one of my churches 🙂
It’s quite rare for me to find white-washed walls in a church, most of them have bare stone.
So different from our churches in Norfolk and Suffolk, we have lots of white walls, well mostly white walls 🙂 but a great photo.
With white walls you never know what delights may be hidden – as I understand it, in days gone by many church walls were painted, hence the occasional discovery when the whitewash is removed – with stone walls you know there is nothing left.
Very true, but most of the churches here had mediveal wall paintigs, quite a few left, theses were painted over and they come to light every now and then 🙂
Love it! It reminds me of a novel: the character, with his brand new ‘daguerreotype,’ hardly tried to catch the spirits in his house. 🙂
to a catch a ‘spirit’ with a daguerreotype would be a trick indeed!
