The better half (in the late 60s, before I married her) lived for part of a year in the ‘smallest house’ facing the harbour here. Though it was growing in reputation as an artist colony the locals were still very small minded. She liked sunbathing, leading her landlady to threaten to evict her because she ‘was starting to look like a nignog… I do hope times have changed there!
I think times have changed – they have had to. Certain older members in my extended family continue to slip into such descriptive language though there is seldom the underlying discrimination attached.
